Dear Affiliates of the NBER Program on Aging -

I am very sorry to share the news that Richard Sutch, an affiliate of
both the Aging and Development of the American Economy Programs at the
NBER, passed away yesterday.  He was a Professor of Economics (Emeritus)
at the University of California - Riverside.

Richard made important contributions in both economic history and the
economics of aging.  His research on slavery and emancipation,
particularly his book /One Kind Of Freedom/ (co-authored with Roger
Ransom), was very influential.  He was also an active contributor to the
study of labor force participation trends of older workers and to the
demography of aging more generally.

Richard received his B.A. from the University of Washington and his
Ph.D. from MIT.  He was a past president of the Economic History
Association and a Fellow of the Cliometric Society.  He will be deeply
missed.
