Dear Research Colleagues -

I am pleased to announce that Nicole Maestas, a Research Associate in
both the Aging and Labor Studies programs and an Associate Professor of
Health Care Policy at Harvard Medical School, is the new Director of the
NBER Disability Research Center (DRC).  Nicole has served as Associate
Director since July 2016, when David Wise, the founding Director,
stepped down.  Nicole's research expertise encompasses a wide range of
issues related to disability insurance; she has been particularly
focused on how DI and health insurance affect labor supply and other
economic behaviors.  Nicole recently served on the Social Security
Advisory Board's Disability Policy Panel.

Nicole succeeds David Autor, who, following a term as Associate
Director, became DRC Director in July 2016.  I am very grateful to David
for his outstanding leadership in the last 18 months, and on behalf of
all of the DRC-affiliated researchers, I thank him for all his
dedication and hard work.  Last summer, David became co-director of the
NBER Labor Studies Program, along with Alex Mas.  David will continue to
play an active and important role in the DRC, but in light of his other
new responsibilities, henceforth he will serve as Associate Director.
SSA approved the change in David and Nicole's roles last week.  Jeff
Liebman continues to serve as a Senior Adviser to the NBER DRC.

I know that Nicole will guide the DRC to new heights of accomplishment
and will expand our research community's capacity to contribute to
policy evaluation and design in this area. Please join me in welcoming
Nicole and David to their new roles.
