Dear Members of the NBER Economics of Aging Program:

David Wise, who launched the NBER Program on the Economics of Aging in
1986 and who will mark three decades of program leadership this summer,
has informed me that he would like to step down from this role. David
has played a truly remarkable part in building not just the NBER's
research activities, but also in creating a vibrant research community
within the economics profession more generally. David has drawn
together researchers with many distinct interests, including labor
economics, public finance, health economics, household finance,
demography, and behavioral economics, and enabled them to collectively
tackle some of the most important economic questions of our time. I
hope that you will join me in thanking David for his visionary role in
creating this program (remember, the Baby Boomers were in their 30s in
1986!) and for his tireless efforts in securing support for research in
this field.

David has been particularly influential as a mentor for junior scholars
with interests in the economics of aging. As a tribute to David's role,
I plan to collect a set of "thank you's" from the many researchers who
have been drawn to the Economics of Aging, or whose work in this area
has been supported, by David's efforts. If you would like to include a
message in this compendium, please send it on letterhead as a pdf file
to my assistant, Raquel Greene (greener_at_nber.org) by June 30. If you
would prefer to mail your letter, please send it to: Ms. Raquel Greene,
NBER, 1050 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge MA 02138-5398. There is no
length limit on messages, but in my experience, messages that fit on a
single page work well.

I plan to reach out in the coming weeks to many Economics of Aging
program members to solicit advice on selecting the next program
director. I hope that you will not hesitate to contact me and to share
your views about the essential attributes of David's successor. I would
also welcome suggestions about potential candidates who might be well
suited to this role.

Thank you for your advice and input. All best wishes.

Jim Poterba
