Dear Members of the Aging Program,


The year 2015 is the fiftieth anniversary of the publication of Gary
Becker’s paper “A Theory of the Allocation of Time,” in the 1965 volume
of /The Economic Journal/. To mark that occasion, the Editors of the
journal /Health Economics/ invited Michael Grossman to write an
editorial that focuses on the importance of that paper in the history
and evolution of the field of health economics. The editorial is
