Re: NBER Organizational Economics Working Group Meetings,
December 10-11, 2010
Date: September 9, 2010

Greetings, organizational economists and fellow travelers. This note
announces what can be seen as two separate meetings of the NBER OE
working group, but these two meetings happen to be on adjacent days
(December 10th and 11th, 2010) in Cambridge.

On Dec. 10, Bob Gibbons and Dr. Elizabeth Martinez (MGH and HMS) will
co-organize a day-long meeting of the OE group on the organization
and productivity of healthcare delivery. We hope to have an
interesting set of healthcare economists and physicians in attendance
and doing some of the presenting, but we are running this as a
meeting of the OE group because there seem to be many topics in
healthcare delivery that are analogous to familiar topics in OE
(ranging from incentives for individual providers, to the behavior of
small groups such as an ICU's staff, to the structure and performance
of larger organizations such as medical practices and hospitals, to
issues between organizations such as in "accountable care organizations").

In addition to these questions analogous to OE's standard topics,
there are also important related questions concerning
productivity. And it happens that the NBER's Productivity group is
also meeting on December 10, so the two groups will meet jointly
during the morning (with Ernie Berndt co-organizing this shared
morning session). The OE group will then continue to discuss the
organization and productivity of healthcare delivery in the afternoon
of December 10, while the Productivity group will meet separately and
take up other topics.

Then, on December 11, the OE group will have a more traditional
meeting, organized by Bob, focusing on organizational design and
performance (broadly construed) outside of healthcare delivery.

You are welcome to submit paper(s) to either or both
meetings. Please submit papers via this website:
http://www.nber.org/confsubmit/backend/cfp?id=OEf10. If you have
colleagues with papers that might fit either meeting, please
encourage them to submit them.

Please submit papers (or extended abstracts) for either meeting by
September 15.

Regardless of whether you are presenting, you are welcome attend
either or both meetings. For both meetings, however, we must ask
non-presenters to fund their own travel and hotel, but there will be
various conference meals (schedule to be determined).
