Subject: New Innovators Award Program

Dear colleagues:

The funding announcement described below is a good opportunity for researchers who have received their PhD in the last ten years.  I urge you to take a look at it if you are eligible, or pass it on to more junior colleagues if you are outside that window.

A funding announcement for the NIH Director's New Innovator Awards has now been released.  This award, which has a shorter turnaround than the standard NIH grant application, is a great opportunity for significant research funding for a project utilizing innovative methods and/or data, addressing topics in the arena of public health.   NIH states it is designed to "support exceptionally creative new investigators who propose highly innovative approaches that have the potential to produce an unusually high impact."

NBER researchers have had substantial past success in obtaining NIH funding, particularly from the institutes on aging and on child health and development.  You should consider applying if you have a project you believe fits the bill.

Key points of the funding announcement and a link to the full text are provided below.  Please feel free to contact Joan Stillwell (stillwel@nber.org) or Janet Stein (jbstein@nber.org) if you have questions or would like to apply.

Sincerely,

David Wise
