NBER Planning -- Virtual Summer Institute and Fall 2020 Meetings

Dear NBER Colleagues -

The Virtual 2020 Summer Institute will start one week from today
and run from Monday July 6 through Saturday July 25.  The meetings will
be hosted on the Zoom platform, in most cases as webinars, and
registered participants will be emailed information on the Zoom meeting
links on the day before, or morning of, each meeting.  Please do not
redistribute this information; it will not be posted on the conference
schedule pages.  If you have not yet responded to Summer Institute
invitations from the NBER Conference Department, you must do so TODAY in
order to receive Zoom meeting announcements.

To promote access, nearly all of the Summer Institute meetings will
be live-streamed on YouTube and available to a broad audience.  The full
schedule of Summer Institute meetings may be found here:

http://conference.nber.org/confer/2020/SI2020/SI2020.html

The URLs for the live-streams will be assigned each day by YouTube.  As
soon as they are available, they will be posted on the "Summer Institute
Live" page:

https://conference.nber.org/confer/2020SI_Livestream.html

Please feel free to share information on live-stream links and more
generally to explain to students and colleagues how to find the links
each day.  The NBER conference team will be stretched very thin
throughout Summer Institute, so if you are not registered for a meeting
but would like to attend, please follow the meeting on YouTube rather
than emailing the NBER conference department to ask for a Zoom link.
Most meetings will be live-streamed, but except for special events such
as panel discussions or keynote lectures,  they will not be posted for
viewing after the session concludes.

The Virtual Summer Institute is an experiment, and I hope that you
will not hesitate to share reactions with me in real-time or when you
receive the post-conference evaluation survey in late July.

Looking beyond the Summer Institute, in light of uncertainty about
the course of the pandemic and continuing restrictions on large
gatherings, the NBER will not hold any in-person meetings for the
remainder of 2020.  Meetings that were planned for the fall will in most
cases be held virtually; further details will be forthcoming later this
summer.

I hope that you are navigating this extraordinary time as well as
possible.  While I regret that we will not be able to meet in-person
this summer, I hope that we will be able to return to such gatherings
before too long.

Sincerely,

Jim Poterba
