Information on Research Papers Appearing in Journals with Pre-Publication Restrictions in the past ~3 months

Dear NBER Colleagues,

I am writing to collect information on research papers that have been published since February in journals that preclude pre-publication distribution. These are papers that could not be included in the NBER working paper series. Information on these papers will be distributed in the NBER List of Affiliates’ Work in Medical and Other Journals with Pre-Publication Restrictions. Health-related papers will also be listed in the spring Bulletin on Health.

If one or more of your papers appeared in the last 3 months in a peer-reviewed journal with a pre-publication embargo policy,* please send a link to the published paper, and/or citation details, to me at sstewart_at_nber.org <mailto:sstewart_at_nber.org> by Friday June 12th. To be included in the "NBER List," papers must meet the same standards as submissions to the NBER working paper series – they should present new research findings and may not make policy recommendations or normative statements.

*I recently learned that while many non-economics journals state in their instructions to authors that a submitted paper cannot have been published elsewhere, in many cases this does not preclude the posting of working papers. For example, PNAS, Science, and Demography recently explained to me that NBER working papers posted prior to submission are not a concern, but that they would like to be told about online working papers at the time of submission. Since many authors may not know this, papers in these journals will still be eligible for the "pre-publication restriction" list, but we encourage you to check with journals prior to submission to see if you can post your work to the NBER series.

The list of papers from last cycle may be found here: https://www.nber.org/BH/2020no1/lemedical_other_20201.html <https://www.nber.org/BH/2020no1/lemedical_other_20201.html>

Thank you for providing this information, and allowing the NBER to call attention to this increasingly significant body of research by our affiliates.

Best,
Susan Stewart
