Dear NBER Researchers -

I am writing to report on several NBER news items and to describe
plans for the 2019 Summer Institute, a welcome distraction from the
polar vortex gripping much of the U.S. this week!

First, the next issue of the NBER Reporterwill list awards received
by NBER-affiliated researchers during the past year.  If you received an
honor during 2018 that you would like to include, please send a short
description -- no more than 25 words -- to my assistant, Magdalen
Blankenship (magdalen_at_nber.org) by Monday, February 18.  Please include
"2018 Awards" in the email subject line; if you shared your award with
other researchers, please include that information.  To keep the list of
reasonable length, we cannot include honors bestowed by researchers'
home universities, such as named chairs or departmental honors.

Second, this Sunday, February 3, is the deadline for nominating
Faculty Research Fellow and Research Associate candidates.  A robust
nomination process is critical to the intellectual vitality of the
NBER's programs.  To propose a candidate, please follow the directions
in the email that you received from me on January 15 with the subject
line "NBER Nominations for 2019."  If you cannot find that message,
please email Denis Healy (dhealy_at_nber.org), the NBER's assistant
corporate secretary, who oversees the nomination process.  I hope that
you will be particularly attentive to nominating researchers from groups
historically under-represented in the economics profession.

Third, there have been NBER several leadership transitions in the
last year.  I am very grateful to the researchers who have taken on new
responsibilities:

* Gita Gopinath resigned as co-director of the International Finance and
Macroeconomics program when she was appointed Economic Counsellor and
Director of Research at the IMF.  Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, formerly
co-director, continues as director.

* Seema Jayachandran and Ben Olken are the new co-directors of the
Development Economics Program, succeeding founding director Duncan Thomas.

* Nicole Maestas is the director of the NBER's newly-awarded Disability
and Retirement Research Center, funded by the Social Security
Administration.  Jeffrey Brown and Courtney Coile are the Center's
associate directors.

* Brigitte Madrian resigned as co-director of the Household Finance
working group when she was appointed Dean of the BYU Marriott School of
Business.  Stephen Zeldes, formerly co-director, continues as director.

* Emi Nakamura and Jón Steinsson are the new co-directors of the
Monetary Economics program, succeeding Christina Romer and David Romer.

Finally, the 2019 Summer Institute will take place between July 8
and July 26.  The current schedule is posted at

https://conference.nber.org/confer/2019/SI2019/SI2019.html

and the call for papers is posted at

https://conference.nber.org/confer/2019/SI2019/call2019.html

The deadline for submissions is March 20; please share this call with
colleagues or others who have work that might be suitable for
presentation.  On the afternoon of Thursday July 25, NBER Research
Associate Katherine Baicker, the Emmett Dedmon Professor and Dean at the
University of Chicago Harris School of Public Policy, will deliver the
Martin Feldstein Lecture. The 2019 Methods Lectures will be presented on
Sunday afternoon, July 21, by Edward Miguel, the Oxfam Professor in
Environmental and Resource Economics at the University of
California-Berkeley.  He will be speaking on "Research Transparency and
Reproducibility."

All best wishes - I look forward to seeing you in July if not before.

Jim Poterba
