Code of Conduct at NBER Meetings

Dear NBER Colleagues -

The NBER is committed to providing a safe and productive setting
for scientific exchange among all participants at each of the more than
120 meetings that it hosts each year.  To affirm this commitment, to
underscore that neither harassment nor discrimination will be tolerated,
and to provide clear guidance about these expectations for meeting
participants, the program directors and I have developed a conference
code of conduct that will prospectively be communicated to all NBER
conference attendees.  Researchers who are taking part in NBER meetings
will be reminded of this code in communications from the NBER conference
department, and there will be a link to it on all conference programs.

A copy of the code of conduct is attached to this message.  I would
call attention in particular to the information on who to contact in the
event that there are breaches of this code.

I am currently working with the NBER's board of directors to
develop a broader code of conduct, extending beyond conference
participation, that will apply to both NBER affiliated researchers and
board members.

I hope that you will join with me in making sure that the
interactions at NBER meetings provide outstanding opportunities for
research advancement while also adhering to the highest standards of
professional conduct.  All best wishes for the New Year.

Jim Poterba
