Dear NBER Board Members, Researchers, and Staff Members -

I hope that you will join me in congratulating three NBER researchers
who today were honored by the American Economic Association.

Parag Pathak of MIT has been named this year's winner of the John Bates
Clark Medal.  Parag has made important contributions in market design
and in applying tools from this field to education policy. The prize
citation notes that his work "blends institutional knowledge,
theoretical sophistication, and careful empirical analysis to provide
insights that are of immediate value to important public policy issues."
Parag's research has provided new insights on the design of matching
algorithms in large markets, and used these conceptual insights to
student allocation mechanisms in public school systems.  He has also
analyzed the empirical consequences of different student allocation
rules, and also made important advances in our understanding the
education production function.  Parag is the co-director of the NBER's
Working Group on Market Design, and a Research Associate in three NBER
programs: Education, Industrial Organization, and Public Economics.

Two of the AEA's four new Distinguished Fellows also have current NBER
ties.  Francine Blau, a labor economist who is the Frances Perkins
Professor of Industrial and Labor Relations and Professor of Economics
at Cornell, is an NBER Research Associate in the Labor Studies and
Education programs.  Economic historian Joel Mokyr, the Robert Strotz
Professor of Economics and History at Northwestern, is a member of the
NBER Board of Directors.  The other new Fellows are Henry Aaron of the
Brookings Institution and Judge Richard Posner of the U.S. Seventh
Circuit Court of Appeals and the University of Chicago.  Judge Posner
was an NBER-affiliated researcher in the 1970s.

All best wishes.
