Dear NBER Board Members, Researchers, and Staff -

I hope that you will join me in congratulating Research Associate Angus
Deaton, who today was awarded the 2015 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics
for his work on consumption, poverty, and welfare. The background
material that describes the prize citation, which can be found at

http://www.nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/economic-sciences/laureates/2015/popular-economicsciences2015.pdf

draws attention to Angus' contributions on three distinct topics:
estimating consumer demand systems, in particular the development (with
John Muellbauer) of the Almost Ideal Demand System; modeling the
relationship between aggregate income and aggregate consumption,
especially using household-level panel data to inform this relationship;
and measuring poverty and consumer welfare, with particular emphasis on
drawing inferences from consumption survey data. The citation summary
notes a common theme in Angus' work: "the desire to build bridges
between theory and data ... [and] between individual behaviors and
aggregate economic outcomes."

Angus is the Dwight D. Eisenhower Professor of Economics and
International Affairs at Princeton University. He has been an NBER
Research Associate since 1984, and he has been actively involved in many
NBER projects. It is a tribute to the breadth of his work that he is
affiliated with seven NBER research programs: Aging, Children,
Development, Economic Fluctuations and Growth, Education, Health Care,
and Public Economics.

All best wishes.
