NBER Innovation Policy Working Group: Economics
of Digitization and Copyright Initiative
Call for Proposals
Post-Doctoral Fellowship and Research Grants

Deadline: February 1, 2011

The NBER Innovation Policy Working Group has
recently inaugurated a new initiative on the
Economics of Digitization and Copyright. With
support from the Sloan Foundation, this
initiative seeks to encourage rigorous research
in economics and related disciplines in order to
understand the consequences of digitization, and
the role of copyright and alternative governance mechanisms.

The Economics of Digitization and Copyright
initiative is seeking proposals for the following:
· The NBER Economics of Digitization Post-Doctoral Fellowship
· Proposals for research grants

The Economics of Digitization post-doctoral
fellowship consists of a $60,000 stipend for
academic year 2011-2012, and includes an office
at the NBER Cambridge office. The fellow is
expected to spend the academic year at the NBER,
and to spend some time participating in the
planning of activities for the digitization and
copyright initiative. Strong preference will be
given to just-completed Ph.D.s whose research
focuses on the economics of digitization,
information technology, and evaluating the
consequences of alternative governance systems
for digital works and data. Applicants must have
been granted their PhD or else be expected to
receive it by August 31, 2011. To apply, please
submit a proposal of not more than 3 pages, along
with a CV, by February 1, 2011 to dhealy_at_nber.org.

The Economics of Digitization research grant
program is also seeking proposals for three
$20,000 research grant awards for academic year
2011-2012. We encourage proposals focusing on a
range of issues, including (but not limited to)
measurement of the digital economy, impact of
copyright on the creation and diffusion of
digital works and data, impact of alternative
governance arrangements (e.g., copyleft, Creative
Commons) on the creation and diffusion of digital
works and data, the economics of privacy, and the
pricing of digital goods. Grantees are not
expected to be resident at the NBER, and can use
the funds for a variety of purchases, including
data acquisition, RA fellowships, or summer
support. To apply, please submit a proposal of
not more than 2 pages, along with a CV, by
February 1, 2011 to <mailto:dhealy_at_nber.org>dhealy_at_nber.org.

Winners will be notified by February 20, 2011.

The Economics of Digitization and Copyright
initiative has been supported by a generous grant
