Dear NBER Researchers -

I am pleased to announce that the NBER will be able to provide four
dissertation support grants for Ph.D. students whose research focuses on
the non-profit sector. Research on organizations such as universities,
museums, symphonies, schools, and public charities falls within the
purview of this program. Analysis of the operation of nonprofit
organizations, for example on decision-making within hospitals or
schools, as well as on the impact of services provided by nonprofit
organizations, is eligible for support. Each dissertation grant will
provide a stipend of $15000, up to $6500 in tuition support, and a
research allowance of $3500.

To be eligible for a grant, a student must be working toward a Ph. D. at
a North American university during the 2011-12 academic year.
Applicants must be recommended by, and supervised by, an NBER Research
Associate or Faculty Research Fellow. Applications, consisting of a
research summary of no more than three single-spaced pages and a
one-page letter from the NBER-affiliated dissertation supervisor, should
be sent to my assistant, Ms. Gerri Johnson, gjohnson_at_nber.org, no later
than *January 19, 2011.* I hope that you will inform your
potentially-eligible students of this opportunity for dissertation support.

A panel consisting of James Andreoni (UCSD), David Cutler (Harvard),
Caroline Hoxby (Stanford), and John List (Chicago) will select the grant
recipients. Please contact Gerri Johnson if you have questions about
this grant program or about the application process.

All best wishes for the holiday season.
