Dear NBER Researchers and Staff -

       I am sorry to report that F. Thomas Juster of the University of
Michigan passed away on Wednesday. Tom received his Ph.D. from Columbia
University and was a member of the NBER research staff from 1959 until
1973. He served as Vice President of the NBER from 1969-1972. Tom was
the founding director of the Health and Retirement Survey, the former
director of the Institute for Social Research (ISR), and an active and
effective advocate for the importance of social science research. A
