Dear NBER Family Members:

I am writing to call your attention to two new developments
related to the NBER Conference Department.

The first involves the NBER Summer Institute, which begins next
Monday. As many of you already know, this year we will not be printing
full copies of the papers for each session. All papers are available
on-line at the conference department website. We will, instead, be
copying and distributing handouts of up to ten pages when presenters
request them. If you are a presenter and have such a handout, please
visit the webpage that displays the program for your Summer Institute
meeting, follow the link on that page that you used to upload your
paper, and upload your handout. The NBER Conference Department will
then make copies for distribution at your meeting. Please be considerate
and allow the Conference Department staff a reasonable lead-time for the
copying process.

The second new procedure, which those of you presenting papers at
the Summer Institute have already encountered, is the shift to a
web-based system for submitting papers to the NBER Conference
Department. Instead of emailing your manuscript to confer_at_nber.org and
waiting for the Conference Department staff to upload your paper, you
can now upload your paper directly to the NBER conference website. The
new procedure was tried on an experimental basis this spring, and it
became fully operational this summer. If you have not yet submitted
your paper for the Summer Institute, please visit the webpage with the
program for your meeting, click on the link at the top of the program,
and then submit your paper using that link.

The new procedure will save time for the conference department
staff and enable researchers to upload revised papers when appropriate.
In addition, the new system links directly from the Conference
Department website to a conference summary in the NBER Reporter. I hope
that you will find the new facility easy to use and that it will
simplify the process of submitting papers for NBER meetings.

I would welcome any feedback or suggestions regarding these new
procedures. I look forward to seeing you at the upcoming Summer
Institute -- all best wishes.
