Dear NBER Family Members -

As we start the New Year, I am writing to ask for your help in
identifying promising young faculty members who are strong candidates to
join the NBER as Faculty Research Fellows (FRFs). If you have a colleague,
former student, or other researcher who is doing interesting empirical
research that fits within the scope of any of the Bureau's nineteen
research programs, I hope that you will bring that person to my attention.
Please send your candidate's name and potential program affiliation, a
current c.v., and a one- or two-paragraph summary of why they are a strong
candidate for NBER affiliation to Denis Healy (dhealy_at_nber.org), who is
helping me to manage the nomination process. I would also be grateful for
information on more senior researchers who might qualify as NBER Research
Associates (RAs).

Please remember that a candidate for FRF and RA status must be a faculty
member at a North American college or university. A candidate for a
Research Associate appointment must have tenure at his or her home
institution. Please indicate in your nomination materials whether your
candidate should be considered for a FRF or an RA appointment. The NBER
encourages nominations of strong candidates from under-represented groups
including women and minorities, and I hope that you will devote particular
effort to bringing such researchers to my attention.

All materials must be received by Monday, February 2, 2009, to be
considered in this year's cycle of FRF and RA nominations. If you are
interested in checking on whether a potential candidate is already
associated with the NBER, you can find a complete listing of current NBER
affiliates at www.nber.org/vitae.html.

The strength and vitality of the NBER is completely dependent on the
quality of our research "family," so I hope that you will help me with the
important task of identifying the most promising new affiliates. If you
have any questions about the nomination process, please do not hesitate to
contact Denis Healy at dhealy_at_nber.org or 617-588-0312. I appreciate your
assistance, and look forward to receiving your nominations. All best
wishes.

Jim
