Notification of Acceptance: March 31, 2007
Complete Papers Due: August 31, 2007

Description:
Demographic trends - increases in the number and proportion of older
adults - dictate that the financial, medical, and long-term care needs
of
the elderly will increase substantially in coming decades. Other
demographic and societal trends - fewer children, rising nonmarital
fertility, high divorce rates, and the increasing labor force
participation of women - suggest a diminishing role for the family as a
provider of long-term care and, hence, an expanding role for government
and for market alternatives.

Discussions of long-term care most often focus on the nursing home
industry and on individual's purchases of insurance to pay nursing home
costs. The role of the family has generally been neglected. The extent
to which government long-term care programs "crowd out" individual and
family efforts will depend on the incentives created by government
programs and how individuals and families respond to them. Understanding
the process by which families come to assume the responsibility and
share the burden of caring for disabled elderly family members is
essential for designing and evaluating long-term care policies.

This conference will explore the relationships between government
policy, market alternatives, and individual and family behaviour. It
will have an inter-disciplinary scope, aiming at a fruitful interaction
among different scientific fields.

We seek high quality academic work from fields such as economics,
sociology, psychology and medical sciences.
We are particularly interested in studies that provide internationally
comparable analyses of countries with very different long-term care
policies and programs.

Researchers interested in participating should submit a paper or
extended abstract by March 15, 2007, using the online application link
see below.
