National Fellowships for NBER Faculty Research Fellows

We will again offer NBER National Fellowships that are available exclusively to NBER Faculty Research Fellows. We have now elected three classes of NBER National Fellows, including the group that will be here in 2001-2002.

National Fellows spend an academic year at the NBER Office in Cambridge and receive a stipend* to replace their lost academic salary. Priority will be given to individuals from outside the Cambridge area. We now expect to select 3 or 4 National Fellows for the academic year 2002-2003. If all goes well, we will continue this program in future years as well.

We are specifically willing to select fellows now for 2002-03 to allow more advance planning by those who want to apply. You are eligible to apply if you are a Faculty Research Fellow now even if you get promoted to Research Associate between now and the time that you take up residence in Cambridge.

National Fellows will be expected to spend the entire academic year at the Bureau and to devote their time to research and writing in the area of their program affiliation. We would of course be pleased if some National Fellows have part-year sabbatical support from their home institutions. To the extent that this occurs, we will be able to appoint more National Fellows. We are of course always happy to have NBER Faculty Research Fellows as visitors for a year or part of the year if you have your own funds.

If you are interested in applying for an NBER National Fellowship, please write a letter (not exceeding two pages) to Martin Feldstein indicating the research that you would pursue if you are selected as a National Fellow.

Application letters are due by December 30, 2000. The National Fellows will be announced on January 31, 2001.

* Please note that the fellowship will reimburse your home institution for your salary. Stipends will not be paid directly to an individual.
