Dear All:

We have been informed by our building management that electricity will be shut off for several hours
starting at 7:00 am on Saturday, Oct 31, 2020. We are taking this opportunity to also upgrade operating
systems of our servers. All servers and office desktop computers will power down when the electricity
is turned off. An estimate of 6-8 hours of power outage has been given to us. Then we will need some time
to make sure all systems come up on the updated operating system. Certain services may come up faster
but you may expect some irregularity in service.

When: Saturday, Oct 31, 2020 from 7:00 AM to about 5:00 PM EST.

What is being done:
         * Upgrade of OS on Computing Servers
         * Security patches.
         * Some storage volume moved to a newer server.
         * Firewall OS upgrade.

What will be affected:
         * Internal and external network will be down.
         * Access to network drive(s) will be down.
         * Email will be down. Anyone sending you emails will be queued at the
           sender's server and will eventually get delivered to you. You will
           not be able to send emails yourself via NBER servers.
         * Accounting servers will be down.
         * Administrative tools for staff will be down.
         * Database(s) will be down.
         * Web based WP submission, Conference invitations and acceptance will be down.
         * VPN and servers behind the VPN will be down (only affects those who
           need to use the VPN)
         * WiFi will be down.

What will not be affected:
         * www.nber.org website will remain up, but things related to database,
           e.g. WP submissions will be down.

We will send another email once we have restored all services.
Once again, thank you and we appreciate your support accommodating this inconvenience.

NBER IT Team.
