(1) these excel files are re-formatted versions of the original excel files, put into a standardized format that is constant across years.

(2) for the years 1956-1962, several "extra" columns were entered by the data entry firm (for example, total deaths by place of occurence).  these extra columns are included in the original excel files but have been deleted from these re-formatted excel files.  the column headers for these years were also re-formatted for easier reading of the files into stata.

(3) observations which we discovered were omitted from the 1947 file during data entry were entered in the "natality1947_append.xls" file, included in this folder.
