If you just want the "cleaned" data, you can just focus on the "5_births_data-cleaned_stata" subfolder, which has cleaned Stata files ("clean_natalityYYYY.dta") that should be ready for you to use. natality_documentation_all.xls is the main doc prepared by Heidi Williams. 4_births_data-uncleaned_stata/clean_natality_1940_1968.do is the file used to clean the 4_births_data-uncleaned_stata/natalityYYYY.dta files 3_births_data-formatted_excel/natalityYYYY.xls are re-formatted versions of the original excel files put into a standardized format across years and a few other fixes. 2_births_data-original_excel/natalityYYYY.xls are the original files as received from the data entry firm. 1_births_data-original_pdf/YYYY.pdf has the original PDFs sent to the data entry firm.
