Consumer Expenditure Survey Family Level Extracts

Quick Reference 1980:1 - 1995:4

The Consumer Expenditure Survey is done by the Census Bureau for the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As distributed by the BLS, the files are very difficult to use. The files in this directory come from John Sabelhaus of the Congressional Budget Office, and are reformated to make access to data more straightforward.

The BLS has posted quite a bit of information (including a faq on the CES Home Page. but documentation for the extracts is in the file cbo.doc on the NBER site.

The files cbofam.sas,cbomerge.sas and cbomemb.sas are examples showing how to read the data. Like this file the SAS programs are not from John but are from the NBER, which makes the files availble on its WWW site at http://www.nber.org/ces_cbo.

The online files are compressed with the Unix 'compress' command. A DOS program to decompress this format is included in a self-extracting file 'gzip124.exe'. Just execute the program, and follow the directions. When downloading the files, make sure that 'binary' mode is used. You may have better luck if you right click on the file name to initiate the download.
