Measuring Economic Progress and Sustainability
Sponsored by the NBER Conference of Research in Income and Wealth
The focus of this conference will be the measurement of economic progress and sustainability in the context of national accounts. In reaction to the Stiglitz-Sen-Fitousi report, the housing and financial collapse, and the ensuing “great recession,” countries around the world are beginning work on what is has the potential to be the largest expansion of the National Accounts since their inception in the United States and England in the 1930s. The objectives of this expansion of the accounts are to extend the accounts to better measure: 1) the impact of economic growth on welfare and the distribution of income 2) the integration of real and financial wealth in a system of national accounts; and 3) the sustainability of economic growth. The expansion will require estimates of many difficult-to-measure variables that will meet the standards expected by users of national accounts data.
The conference will take place August 6-8, 2012 in Cambridge MA. The organizers of the conference are Dale Jorgenson (Harvard University), Steve Landefeld (Bureau of Economic Analysis, and Paul Schreyer (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development). We expect the proceedings from this NBER-CRIW to be published in an edited volume.
The organizers welcome the
submission of papers or abstracts for papers for inclusion in the program. They should be submitted by February 15 in PDF
